Civ 2 was released in 1996 and soon after I discovered this new genre of game.

Now, in 2020, most years I have played the latest of the Civ franchise.

Civ VI Gathering Storm is epic in its scope – so many ‘systems’ or levels of game play.

The points of satisfaction in the game are many – finding a new continent, some ‘goody hut’ contents, meeting new leaders, trades, reward of ‘boosts’ to techs & civics, points for achievements through history, optimising cities, striving towards the victory condition you plump for and the Steam-based game achievement system.

There are many strong features in this Great game. What do I miss? The punchiness of the Advisor videos in Civ2 – there was something about the humour/grittiness of those performances that would add something to Civ VII – maybe underpinned with a measure of AI, trying to emulate emotional intelligence as gameplay proceeds?

And, just spotted this link to upcoming memoir of Sid Meier, ‘the godfather of computer gaming’. At 56 years old, I think I’ll be playing some Civ game for the rest of my life – look forward to seeing how it continues to evolve.
